Two hours and 232 words at a spelling bee didn’t prove to be inane for 11-year-old Caitlin Copenhaver.
In fact, she correctly spelled “inane” to win the Metropolitan Catholic Schools Spelling Bee on Saturday.
Caitlin, daughter of John and Jennifer Copenhaver, is a sixth grader at St. Patrick School in the Elkhorn area. With her victory, she will compete next month in the Midwest Spelling Bee.
Noah Welchans, 13, an eighth-grader at Mary Our Queen, placed second. Third place went to Zane Culjat, 13, a seventh-grader at St. Thomas More.
Ben von Kampen, 13, a St. Philip Neri seventh-grader, took fourth place.
Fifty students from 25 Catholic schools participated in the competition, which was held at St. Stephen the Martyr School in Omaha.
