Omaha police are investigating the death of a man whose body was found Friday during a fire at Courtyard 72 Apartments near 72nd and Seward Streets.
Firefighters were called at 1:25 p.m. and quickly doused the flames. The man was found inside an apartment.
Officer James Shade, a police spokesman, said authorities had not determined the cause of the fire and are awaiting autopsy results to identify the man and cause of death.
A neighbor, Richard Wilson, said the man did not respond to calls from the landlady as residents of building 1614 were exiting. He was the “sweetest, soft-spoken old man,” Kathy Henrich said of the victim.
Henrich used to live at Courtyard 72 and still returns to visit. She said the man would often sit outside during nice weather. Police and arson investigators left the scene about 5:30 p.m.
