WASHINGTON — Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel hosted a breakfast meeting at the Pentagon on Thursday with a bipartisan group of eight House members to chat about the pressing military issues of the day.
The event was organized by Rep. Jeff Fortenberry, R-Neb.
Hagel is a former Republican senator from Nebraska.
A Defense Department official said the discussion covered upcoming budget challenges, the military rebalance toward the Asia-Pacific region, Afghanistan and other issues.
Hagel enjoyed the meeting and intends to keep the dialogue going, according to the official.
In a statement to The World-Herald, Fortenberry confirmed the meeting and said he appreciated Hagel's thoughtfulness and candor.
“It was a great discussion about our defense posture in the 21st century, the needs of our military, and how we deal with the new complexities of globalized threats,” Fortenberry said.
