NU bolsters line depth as Lewis joins roster

LINCOLN — Go ahead and add another name to Nebraska’s rebuilding project on the offensive line.

Junior Alex Lewis, who announced last spring that he planned to transfer to NU, is now on the Huskers’ roster, coach Bo Pelini confirmed Wednesday. Pelini said Lewis is not on scholarship this semester, but he’s participating in winter workouts with the Nebraska players.

Pelini had declined to comment in depth about Lewis’ status prior to Wednesday, presumably because of an ongoing legal situation involving the former Colorado lineman.

Lewis pleaded guilty to third-degree misdemeanor assault in December, a charge that stemmed from an arrest in Boulder, Colo., in May. His sentencing hearing is March 21.

But all signs point to Lewis joining the Huskers for spring practice and ultimately remaining part of the program when preseason camp begins in August.

He’s listed at 6-foot-6, 285 pounds. Lewis started all 12 games for Colorado in 2012. Lewis’ father, Bill, was an All-America center in 1985 for Nebraska.

Pelini indicated Wednesday that Alex Lewis has some versatility, but the coaches haven’t decided where he’ll play just yet.

“He’s probably played more guard, but I think he could be a really good tackle,” Pelini said. “We’ll see how it plays out.”

Lewis will certainly have an opportunity to earn playing time, especially at offensive tackle.

Junior Zach Sterup is the only returning tackle who saw meaningful snaps last year. Brett Qvale and Jeremiah Sirles, Nebraska’s top two offensive tackles in 2013, finished their Husker careers last month. Andrew Rodriguez played tackle and guard for NU last fall, but he’s done now, too.

Cole Pensick and Spencer Long completed their eligibility, too, so building depth on the interior is a priority for the Huskers this offseason.

It’s why Nebraska added three offensive linemen — Tanner Farmer, D.J. Foster and Nick Gates — in the 2014 recruiting class. Gretna product Mick Stoltenberg could start out on the offensive line, too.

“I really like that group,” Pelini said of the incoming offensive line recruits.
