A man was arrested Wednesday after an off-duty Iowa agent thwarted his alleged attempt to rob a gas station in Atlantic.
Brady Thomas Salberg, 22, of Atlantic entered the Casey's General Store at 1408 E. Seventh St. about 8:40 p.m., informed the cashier he was armed and demanded money.
That's when Shelby McCreedy, an off-duty special agent with the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, witnessed the scene unfolding.
McCreedy instructed people in the parking lot to not enter the store and called 911. She then entered the store with her firearm, identified herself as a peace officer and ordered Salberg to the floor. The suspect complied with her orders until Atlantic police officers had arrived.
It was later determined that Salberg did not possess a firearm but had used his hand in his pocket to make it appear he was armed.
Salberg was arrested by Atlantic police and was taken to the Cass County Jail. He was charged with second-degree robbery, a Class C felony.
