A brush fire on Wednesday burned 300 to 500 acres near Cunningham Lake in northern Douglas County, a fire official said.
Pushed by winds, flames leapt up hills north of 96th Street and Bennington Road, said Kyle Tonnies, an assistant Irvington fire chief.
Most of the flames were about 4 or 5 feet high, though some reached 8 to 10 feet.
At one point, about a half-dozen homes were thought to be in danger, but the fire did not reach them, Tonnies said.
Firefighters had not determined how the fire started. Tonnies said high winds made the blaze, reported about 4:15 p.m., difficult to contain.
Eight fire departments responded, including Omaha and Bennington, and firefighters spent about six hours at the scene.
