A La Vista man has been charged with first-degree murder in a more than 10-year-old homicide case in Council Bluffs.
Thomas J. Sanchez, 47, was charged in the killing of Nelson Alvarez-Hernandez, 32, of Omaha on July 31, 2003.
Alvarez-Hernandez was stabbed to death in an altercation outside 1613 S. 13th St. in Council Bluffs.
Sgt. Dave Dawson of the Council Bluffs Police Department said Friday that investigators tied Sanchez to the case through DNA evidence.
Alvarez-Hernandez worked at a South Omaha meatpacking plant. He sometimes dressed as a woman and was known to co-workers as Selena.
The case was not investigated as a hate crime, but members of the Omaha area’s transgender community considered the slaying an attack on them.
Police were notified in September that the DNA profile collected from the case had been identified and reopened the investigation.
Sanchez is being held in the Pottawattamie County Jail on $1 million bail.
Investigators originally listed two suspects in connection with the murder.
