Millard South needed less than 24 hours this weekend to unify the Metro Conference wrestling belts.
The third-ranked Patriots followed up Friday night’s title in the Metro dual tournament with a solid showing in Saturday’s individual portion, taking both championships on the weekend.
It’s Millard South’s first team title since 2009, halting a run of three straight by Omaha Burke.
“This weekend was a good measurement of where you are as a team,” Patriots coach Doug Denson said. “It’s almost a symbol of Class A itself. It’s kind of a depth thing. If you don’t have 10, 12, 14 guys to chip in points, you’re just not going to be in the hunt.”
Even with winning only two of its six championship matches, Millard South was able to hold off second-ranked North — which went 5-0 in the gold-medal round.
Ryan Kostszewa, ranked fifth at 120, and No. 1 138-pounder Isaac DeLoa were the Patriots’ champions. But in their eight wins, the two racked up seven falls, including Kostszewa’s pin in the finals.
“He’s a guy that’s always going to give you 110 percent,” Denson said. “You don’t have to motivate him. He’s already ready.”
DeLoa beat fourth-ranked Brendan Crews of Papillion-La Vista for his title.
North’s parade of winners began at 113, where third-ranked Otis Rollins outlasted No. 2 Michael Conley of Papillion-La Vista 2-1. The Vikings’ Robert Ozuna followed with a hard-fought 6-3 decision over Papio’s Joe Perez in a battle of the top two 126-pound wrestlers, respectively.
The Vikings also got titles from third-ranked Jacobi Jones (170), No. 1 JaVaughn Perkins (182) and DeValon Whitcomb (220).
Jones handed top-ranked Jake Anderson of Omaha Creighton Prep his first loss of the season in a 5-1 victory. Perkins dominated Millard South’s second-ranked Anthony Cloyd in a 17-2 technical fall to become only the fourth wrestler in the 49-year history of the Metro tournament to win four titles.
“It’s something that’s definitely on the list,” Perkins said of winning at the Metro tournament. “This is the first step going forward.”
Burke had three winners in a fourth-place team showing — Connor Fox at 132, Jared Green (145) and Patrick Kelley (152). Green, ranked second, beat No. 3 Alex Mendez of Millard South 8-2. Top-ranked Kelley decisioned No. 2 Markell Vaughn of Omaha Central 12-7 in an entertaining match.
The other winners were all ranked in the top three in the state: Jake Stogdill of Millard North, ranked second at 106, earned a 13-1 major decision over Millard South’s No. 5 Nathan Rodriguez. Omaha Central’s Corbin Foster (No. 2) won at 160. Third-ranked Collin Stock of Papillion-La Vista South beat No. 4 Gabe Patras of Papillion-La Vista at 195.
Millard West’s Harrison Phillips — ranked first at 285 — was impressive again in a 16-3 major decision over No. 3 Terry Jeub of Millard South.
