Midlands residents have a well-deserved reputation for helping their neighbors. That impressive spirit was displayed again this holiday season.
A record $640,571.80 was donated to The World-Herald’s Goodfellows campaign. That’s $65,524.20 more than the old record, set in 2009, and nearly 17 percent more than last year’s total of $548,884.65. Eighty-five percent of this year’s 1,555 donors were from the Omaha area. Other donations came from across Nebraska and several other states.
Goodfellows provides one-time emergency housing and utility assistance, holiday meal vouchers, and clothing and eyeglass aid. Every dollar donated goes directly to local people in need, as the newspaper pays all administrative costs.
More than 8,000 families will be helped this fiscal year, which ends in February. That total includes 1,274 families who received certificates they could use to get ingredients for a holiday meal at area grocery stores. Not a ZIP code in the metro area hasn’t been helped.
So a sincere “thank you” is in order for all who donated. Your neighbors needed assistance, and you responded with amazing generosity.
