RAVENNA — The biggest shot in Doniphan-Trumbull's game at Ravenna Thursday night came right at the end of the third quarter.
That's when senior Lorenzo Williams nailed a 3-pointer at the buzzer to pull the Class C-2 No. 6 Cardinals to within a point of the Bluejays. Doniphan-Trumbull scored the first eight points of the fourth quarter, then held on in the final minute for a 43-40 Lou-Platte Conference win.
"The biggest turning point in the whole thing was we were up 34-30 and had a chance to score and Williams comes down here and hits a big three," Ravenna coach Paul Beranek said. "You have to credit him. It kind of took the sails out of us because it took a long time to score after that."
Doniphan-Trumbull coach Steve Hartman knew how big that 3-pointer was too.
"When Lorenzo hit the big three ... that's not an accident," Hartman said. "He shoots it better from that distance than he does from 10 feet. He called for the ball. That was a big play."
Doniphan-Trumbull (7-1) built its lead up to 41-34 on a basket by Riley Wiltfong with 56 seconds left on the clock. The Bluejays (7-2) went into the final minute before finally scoring their first points of the quarter.
That seven-point lead may have looked pretty comfortable, but it disappeared in a hurry. Freshman Jake Teichmeier scored on a basket and a free throw with 47 seconds left, then after a turnover Blake Chramosta nailed a 3-pointer to pull Ravenna within a point at 41-40 with 27 seconds on the clock.
Ravenna had a chance to take the lead after Chramosta stole a pass, but his jumper went off the rim. Williams was fouled with 6.6 seconds left and made both free throws to up the Doniphan-Trumbull lead to three points.
Chramosta got off a 3-pointer at the buzzer for the Bluejays, but it bounced off the rim as the horn sounded.
Creighton Buhr, a 6-foot-5 senior, led Doniphan-Trumbull with 16 points while 6-5 senior Grady Koch had 12 rebounds.
"Both teams just defended like crazy," Beranek said. "You had to earn everything. Creighton Buhr is an amazing player inside. We were exhausting a lot of energy on him and he still kicks our butt a little bit. And then the other big fellow comes in there too. Those guys are tough."
Hartman said it was a war in the lane most of the night. Ravenna did it with dribble penetration while Doniphan-Trumbull used their size to get inside.
"I think they were making a real emphasis of trying to be physical with our kids," Hartman said. "We didn't have to try. We have an athletic bunch. We just had to calm down and try to play the game. Just slow down. Just like I was afraid of, we took a lot of quick shots in the first half and we didn't get (Buhr) the ball down around the rim in the first half.
"Grady was great on the defensive boards late. We forced some tough shots, but we only gave them one. We didn't give up any offensive rebounds."
The Cardinals seniors had beaten Ravenna when they were freshmen, but the Bluejays won the past two seasons. Doniphan-Trumbull had nearly two weeks off since playing in the Heartland Holiday Tournament in late December.
"We were a little rusty," Hartman said. "I think the two weeks off hurt us a little bit tonight. But as we settled down we executed much better."

When Ravenna needed the points the most, junior Sydney Kucera came through.
Kucera scored eight of her game-high 21 points in the fourth quarter to help the Bluejays to a 54-44 victory over Doniphan-Trumbull. All eight of those fourth-quarter points came after the Cardinals (3-6) had pulled to within 42-39 with 5:21 left on the clock.
"We want to look inside," Ravenna coach Noah Maulsby said. "Sydney was doing a good job of getting post position, getting sealed. The girls did a good job of finding her. It's something we've been trying to get them to do more and more and it worked tonight. It was good to see her have a good game."
Kucera scored two straight baskets, and then after a free throw by Anna Ripp, scored again inside to up the lead to 49-42 with 2:46 left.
"Against a good team, you have to make sure you keep it close and when you have your chances you take advantage of it," Doniphan-Trumbull coach Mark Davis said. "We didn't tonight. We had some shots to tie it and just couldn't quite get it done."
Caelan Basnett and Amy Johnson added 11 points apiece for Ravenna (8-2).
Emma Groshans and Jordyn Brummund led Doniphan-Trumbull with 14 points each while Amy Glover had 13.
"They have some good athletes," Maulsby said. "They are getting better. Brummond is quick. You have to keep her from going left. (Groshans) can shoot the ball and (Glover) is good in the post. They have some players."
The game was the first of three straight for the Bluejays. They host Wood River Friday and then play Ansley-Litchfield on Saturday.
"We still have a ton of stuff to work on," Maulsby said. "We have an important stretch coming with a game tomorrow and a game Saturday. We have to be able to put games together. Not spurts. Not a half here and a half there. We have to put it together."
