CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) — A Parkersburg man who was shot in an altercation in which a Cedar Falls police officer was beaten close to unconsciousness on Christmas was arrested Monday after being released from a hospital.
Zachary Church, 27, was released from Sartori Memorial Hospital in Cedar Falls, according to the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation.
Church had been hospitalized since the early-morning shooting on Dec. 25. Officer Bob Anderson said he approached Church while he was asleep behind the wheel of a running car.
Anderson, a 20-year department veteran, said he asked Church to take a seat in his patrol car.
Authorities said Church wasn’t under arrest or handcuffed, and Anderson was simply investigating the situation. Church is accused of suddenly punching Anderson.
Anderson said he felt himself losing consciousness and warned Church that he would shoot him if he didn’t stop.
Anderson shot Church, and other officers called to the scene helped detain him.
Church faces charges of assault against a peace officer and possession of marijuana with intent to deliver.
Authorities are still investigating Anderson’s use of lethal force.
