A 2-year-old child found cold and alone Wednesday night in a parked car near 50th Street and Ames Avenue has been taken into protective custody.
Officer Michael Pecha, a spokesman for the Omaha Police Department, said officers were called to the parking lot outside a bank at 5018 Ames Ave., about 6:30 p.m. to check on an intoxicated woman who was on the ground. As officers called for an ambulance, they noticed a vehicle in the middle of the lot with the engine off, the lights on and the driver's door open.
Inside the car, they found the woman's daughter crying and cold to the touch, Pecha said. The child was taken to the Nebraska Medical Center and her mother, Kimberly Deleau, 41, of Omaha, was taken to Immanuel Medical Center.
Patrick Deleau, the woman's 56-year-old husband, approached officers during the investigation and also appeared to be intoxicated. Witnesses reported that the husband and wife went to the nearby Walmart, which is still under construction, and attempted to return merchandise.
Employees asked the couple to leave and said each one left in a different direction but neither returned to the car. The mother and stepfather were both cited for suspicion of child neglect.
