KEARNEY, Neb. — Kearney police were looking for a vehicle involved in an explosion or fire Tuesday evening in south Kearney that sent a woman to a Lincoln burn center.
At about 5:30 p.m., police received a report that burning items had been dumped in an alley in the 800 block of Avenue C. Before officers arrived at the scene, the 911 communications center received a medical call because a woman had been burned at the same location, said Sgt. Tony Cordova of the Kearney Police Department.
Witnesses described a fire or explosion in a vehicle and said several people left the area in a red 1998 Ford Taurus with Kansas license plates 206FUF. A Kansas woman left at the scene suffered significant burns, he said.
Cordova said the other two occupants may have also been injured, and officers were looking for them.
The woman was transported to Kearney's Good Samaritan Hospital and was later transported to the burn unit of St. Elizabeth's Regional Medical Center in Lincoln where Cordova said she was listed in critical but stable condition.
