An anonymous Santa Claus spread holiday cheer among Bellevue's police officers Wednesday by donating gift cards for their lunch breaks.
Police Chief Mark Elbert said the donor sent him a Christmas card containing 10 Panera Bread gift cards, each valued at $15. The donor asked that the gift cards “be distributed to the 10 lowest ranking officers” working on Christmas Day, he said.
“I sincerely want to thank whoever did this,” Elbert said. “This was a really nice gesture by someone who doesn't want anything in return.”
The chief said 10 road patrol officers is the typical number assigned to the streets on Christmas Day.
“The donor either had some inside knowledge or did a pretty good job of guessing because that's about how many people we had working on that crew,” Elbert said. “It was a nice gesture that is very much appreciated.”
