A former Ralston Public Schools teacher was convicted Thursday of three counts of sexual assault in the repeated touchings of elementary students.
Nicholas Richter - a former honors teacher in math and English - will be sentenced next year. Richter faces up five years in prison on each count.
The allegations against Richter came to light in April 2012 after an after-school employee overheard one student taunting another.
Three honors students, ages 10 to 12, had testified that Richter had touched them more than 15 times each. Two students said he touched their penises repeatedly, over their clothing. A third student said Richter repeatedly massaged and groped his buttocks.
Their testimony was buttressed by the testimony of a middle-aged man who said he also was groped by Richter when he was a student in a Council Bluffs school in the mid-1980s.
This week's retrial came after a jury in August had reached a stalemate over whether Richter was guilty. Jurors in that case said they had a hard time determining whether Richter's intent was sexual when he touched the boys.
This jury had no such struggle. After three days of testimony, they deliberated a little over 2 1/2 hours before finding Richter guilty of all counts.
Richter cried quietly after the verdict was read. His bond was revoked and he was led out of the courtroom in handcuffs.
