COUNCIL BLUFFS — Looking for something to do on New Year's Eve?
First Night Council Bluffs still needs about 20 volunteers to help monitor events and activities in downtown Council Bluffs and at the Mid-America Center.
It's a good way to get to see the events you want for free, First Night Council Bluffs organizers said.
“Volunteers receive a free admission button,” said event organizer Inky Westfall. “Volunteers can do their shift and then go see the event they want for free or go before their shift.”
The alcohol-free, family-friendly celebration will include new performances and a new location. Along with the indoor venues in historic downtown Council Bluffs, the Mid-America Center will host children's activities and the headlining act, Brulé.
Children's activities, running from 4:30 to 8 p.m., include crafts, a magician, stilt walkers, fire jugglers and face painters, as well as the Bubble Wrap Stomp Finale at 7:45 p.m.
Brulé will perform two shows at 8 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. to cap off the night.
Downtown venues include First Baptist Church, First Congregational Church, St. John Lutheran Church and the Council Bluffs Public Library.
First Night came into existence as part of the National Bicentennial in 1976. Originally celebrated in Boston, First Night has grown to include nearly 140 communities in three countries. The Council Bluffs event is the only one in Iowa, Nebraska or South Dakota.
First Night is founded on the Four Pillars of the New Year: celebration, community, New Year's Eve and the arts. The theme this year is “A Night to Remember.”
Admission buttons are $10 for adults, and children younger than 12 will be admitted for free. The buttons serve as the ticket for admission to every performance and venue. Buttons will be sold at the City Hall Treasurer's Office.
First Night is also funded in part by a grant from the Iowa West Foundation. Other major sponsors are the City of Council Bluffs, The Daily Nonpareil, Cox Communications and the Pottawattamie County Board.
