Business digest: A good sign for RV industry’s recovery

RV manufacturers expect to pass another milestone in their recovery from the recession. Led by sales growth for towable RVs and pricier stand-alone motor homes, recreational vehicle makers expect to ship more than 300,000 units to dealers this year for the first time since the economic downturn. The Recreation Vehicle Industry Association said shipments from RV manufacturers to dealers are expected to reach 316,300 units in 2013. That would be up nearly 11 percent from last year’s total of 285,749.

Apple buys trend hunter Topsy

Apple has bought Topsy Labs in a deal that will provide the iPhone maker with more insights about the chatter on Twitter. Topsy pores through the stream of conversations occurring on Twitter to identify trends and people influencing public opinion. The San Francisco startup also runs a free search engine that boasts an index of every tweet posted since 2006, a resource that’s not publicly available on Twitter’s own online messaging service. The acquisition price wasn’t disclosed.

Chick-fil-A altering ingredients

Chick-fil-A is doing tests to remove high-fructose corn syrup from its white buns and artificial dyes from its sauces and dressings as part of a push to improve its ingredients. The fast-food chicken chain said it also removed a yellow dye from its chicken soup and that the recipe should be in restaurants by the end of the year.
