LINCOLN — By next fall, Cather and Pound Halls will officially be closed.
The status of the 50-year-old dorms hung in limbo this year as housing numbers fluctuated and construction on newer housing units was completed.
But Sue Gildersleeve, director of housing at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, said Monday that the decision has been made to take both dorms “offline” after the 2014 summer session.
Pound will close after the 2014 spring semester. Cather will be open through August while Selleck, the dorm usually open in the summer, undergoes renovations for fire safety.
No date has been set for demolition of the twin high rises. Gildersleeve said housing officials have not decided what to do with the Cather/Pound/Neihardt Dining Center situated between the buildings, and the timeline will depend on that decision.
Cather had been scheduled to close last spring, but it reopened in August to accommodate a swell of students living on UNL campus this semester.
