CORNING, Iowa — Two brothers drowned over the weekend after they fell through the ice on a pond near their family’s home in rural Prescott, Iowa.
The boys were outside playing when the accident occurred early Saturday evening, said Donnie Willett, the Adams County emergency management director. He spoke from Corning, where a press conference was held Monday.
Authorities did not release their names, but services were pending for T.J. Frey, 11, and Nate Frey, 9, at Powers Funeral Home in Creston.
Their parents, Tom and Lisa Frey, were home at the time, Willett said. The boys fell through about an inch of ice.
Authorities received a 911 call at 5:34 p.m. Saturday.
Willett said the first child was found submerged under the ice about 10 to 15 minutes after emergency crews arrived, and the other boy was found shortly thereafter. They were flown to a Des Moines hospital.
The Sheriff’s Office is investigating the deaths.
