The sophomore from Spring, Texas, has played all three linebacker positions this season and remained part of the Huskers’ nickel package. Santos currently is tied with Corey Cooper for the team lead with 68 tackles, including six for losses.
Q: What did you see Sunday as the team returned to practice and started the process of refocusing for Penn State?
A: As far as our goals before the season and wanting to get back to where we were and playing for a Big Ten championship, now we’ve got to face reality. We have to establish what we want to do from this point, and that’s continue to grow as a defense and continue to prove defensively what we can do. And as a team overall, we just need to get back on track and show the rest of the nation what we’re about.
Q: If you could take anything back defensively from that game Saturday, what might it be?
A: There were a couple execution problems, little things. There’s always some small details that you wish you maybe could have changed, because you never know what could’ve made a difference.
Q: Is the defense getting a little closer to where you guys want it to be or thought it could be?
A: Yeah, it’s going. We’re getting better and I see the chemistry is building. It’s just a nonstop thing and we’ve just got to keep working on it each and every day.
Q: Is that true at linebacker as much as anywhere on the defense, in terms of consistency?
A: That’s the main thing is consistency. We’ve always had the potential.
Q: You didn’t make the trip to Penn State two years ago, but you’ve seen 112,000 fans at Michigan. Do you have any expectations with how it might be different at Beaver Stadium?
A: We’re just expecting a huge crowd at Happy Valley, expecting it to be loud and energetic. Penn State is in a tough situation, but I have a feeling that they’re going to come out ready to play, and the fans will be right behind them.
Q: You’ll see power sets from Penn State. Are those the favorite games for the linebackers?
A: We’re always happy when we can have all the linebackers in at the same time. It just means it’s going to be another physical game. They like to ground and pound, so we’ll see how it goes.
