GRAND ISLAND, Neb. — Six points away from elimination Thursday, Norris battled back behind Furman recruit Kasey Hohlen to send Waverly home early from the Class B state volleyball tournament.
Hohlen had six of her team-high 22 kills in the comeback from a 9-1 deficit in the fifth set as the Titans defeated their Eastern Midlands Conference rivals 18-25, 28-18, 25-22, 18-25, 15-12 at Grand Island High School.
“I hate losing,'' Hohlen said. “I didn't want to let the team down.”
After winning for the second time in five matches against Waverly, Norris advanced to Friday's 6:30 p.m. semifinal at the Heartland Events Center against Top 10 No. 1 Grand Island Northwest.
During a timeout at 9-1, Norris coach Christina Boesiger said, she said from the Titans' body language that “we looked beat.”
Hohlen had been in the back row during an eight-point run for Class B No. 3 Waverly (32-5). She said she contributed to her extended stay away from the net with mistakes.
“We were a little panicky,'' she said. “We needed to get it together.”
The No. 5 Titans (28-8) had scoring runs of four, two and three points to trail only 11-10 and force a Viking timeout.
West Virginia recruit Dani Root got their last kill of the match.
Norris finished off the final set with a tap by Hohlen, an unforced error, another Hohlen tap, Mackenzie Allen's kill into an open area in the defense and another unforced error by Waverly, with the Vikings not getting a final attack attempt.
Kylie Hohlen, Kasey's sister who is a junior, had 18 kills and Allen 14 for the Titans.
