Maddie Simon was looking for a school close to home where she got along with the coaches and players.
This week, the 6-foot-1 Lincoln Pius X junior decided that Nebraska’s basketball program fit the bill.
“I’ve always kind of wanted to go to Nebraska since I was little,” she said. “The more I thought about it, it seemed the right place for me. The coaches are great and it’s right here in Lincoln. That made it an easier decision.”
Simon, who averaged 16 points a game last season, had to call the other coaches in her top five — Iowa State, Iowa, Creighton and Oklahoma State — to give them the news.
She said that was tough because she’d built relationships with each of them, but NU coach Connie Yori was thrilled to get the news. Yori told Simon she’s looking at her not as a point guard but as more of a wing player.
Simon said it feels great knowing that the process is over and she’s made the right decision.
It’s time to concentrate on team goals, Simon said, instead of her own with the start of high school basketball looming.
“We’ve never made state, so definitely going to the state tournament and advancing as far as we can in that and hopefully winning state,” she said.
