World-Herald staff writers Sam McKewon and Rich Kaipust recap Nebraska's win over Michigan with highlights from each quarter.
* * *
Jordan Westerkamp: The Hail Mary hero starts Nebraska's opening drive with a 27-yard catch on third-and-15. That play gets NU to midfield, but the drive stalls. The Huskers' defense is able to force a punt, though, and Westerkamp returns the ensuing punt 17 yards.
Ameer Abdullah: Gains 18 yards on a third-and-3, setting up the Huskers at the Michigan 12. Nebraska is not able to punch it in, though, and settles for a Pat Smith field goal. NU leads 3-0.
Zaire Anderson: The linebacker sacks Michigan QB Devin Gardner to start the Wolverines' next drive. The Big House boos.
Thad Randle: On a seven-man blitz, the senior defensive tackle busts through, grabs Gardner by the sleeve and doesn't let go. Another sack. More boos. Michigan punts.
Armstrong: Gains 11 yards on a read option.
Abdullah: Gains 12 on an option. Three plays later, he plows in from 8 yards for a Husker touchdown. Nebraska takes a stout 10-0 lead in the Big House.
Gardner: Finally hits a throw, a 16-yard completion to wide receiver Jeremy Gallon on third-and-9. Gallon gains 12 more yards on a pitch pass one play later, and the first quarter ends with Michigan at the Husker 26.
Gardner: Converts a fourth-and-2 by completing a rollout pass to tight end Devin Funchess for 8 yards.
Al Borges: Michigan's offensive coordinator twice calls a power run to the left on third-and-short. It's slow-developing and ineffective. The Wolverines settle for a field goal after a six-minute drive.
Ron Kellogg: Enters the game for Armstrong. He's unable to generate much, and NU punts.
Graham Glasgow: The Michigan center sends a rocket of a snap right at Gardner's facemask. Gardner can't grab it and the ball bounds backwards 10 yards. Michigan recovers, but its drive is dead as a result.
Matt Wile: Uncorks a 69-yard punt to pin the Huskers at their own 3. The resulting NU drive is nearly a disaster, as Armstrong runs into tight end Sam Cotton and barely avoids a safety. Nebraska punts, but not before losing tackle Jeremiah Sirles to a leg injury.
Avery Moss: The Wolverines go for another fourth down — this time at the Nebraska 36 — and the Husker defensive end comes up big, tracking down Gardner and sacking him for a 3-yard loss. NU heads to the locker room with a 10-3 lead, tenuous as it may seem.
Borges: Calls a nifty throwback screen on Michigan's opening drive. Gardner's throw to Fitz Toussaint goes for 25 yards.
Gardner: Bounces back with a strong drive. He hits tight end Jake Butt for 15, Toussaint for 8, Jehu Chesson for 9 on third-and-6, and Butt again for 11.
Michael Rose and Ciante Evans: On Michigan's first-and-goal from the NU 5, they both cover wideout Jeremy Gallon in the flat while tight end Devin Funchess floats to the corner of the end zone and catches an easy TD from Gardner.
Kenny Bell: On NU's ensuing drive, Armstrong expertly executes a fake to Abdullah and rolls to his right. He could run for a first down, but he tries a pass downfield to the wideout instead. The pass is low, and Bell can't handle it.
Cam Gordon: The UM linebacker blitzes and swamps Armstrong for a 13-yard loss. NU punts.
Zaire Anderson: Sacks Gardner for a 5-yard loss. Michigan gets out of a jam, though, when Gardner hits Funchess for 23-yard inside screen.
Randy Gregory: Sacks Gardner — that's NU's fifth — after Gardner drops the snap. UM doesn't get itself out of this jam, and punts.
Quincy Enunwa: Makes his biggest mistake of the year with a fumble after a pass reception. Gordon, the Michigan linebacker, forces it. As the fourth quarter starts, Michigan has the ball third-and-12 at the NU 35.
Westerkamp: The Nebraska receiver muffs a Michigan punt, Dennis Norfleet recovers and Michigan takes over at the Husker 26 with 10:03 to go.
Brendan Gibbons: Michigan takes a 13-10 lead on a 40-yard field goal by Gibbons with 8:08 left.
Bell: NU faces fourth-and-2 at the UM 31 when Armstrong connects with Bell for a 26-yard gain.
Abdullah: Armstrong actually pitches forward to his I-back on an option left, but it's behind the line of scrimmage and ruled a 5-yard pass as Abdullah scores the go-ahead TD with 2:03 remaining.
Gardner: The Wolverines' last chance is thwarted as he misfires on a fourth-and-5 pass.
