Huskers trounce UNK in sloppy exhibition

LINCOLN — As far as women's basketball exhibition games go, no one would have wished it any longer.

But Nebraska coach Connie Yori wished her team's 75-34 win against the University of Nebraska at Kearney had looked a lot cleaner.

The No. 17 Huskers open their season Friday against UCLA; 22 turnovers and 21 fouls did nothing to encourage Yori's mood.

“If we play like that against UCLA,” she said, “we're going to have to do a lot praying between now and then.”

Said senior forward Jordan Hooper of Alliance: “We just had personal goals, and we didn't really meet those.”

The Huskers have three practices to fix the mistakes. They made their share Sunday, and “got a little mental” about it, Yori said. Though sophomore point guard Rachel Theriot played her first game after an ankle injury, Yori said Theriot looked in need of more conditioning. Theriot should play against the Bruins.

In front of 4,668 at Pinnacle Bank Arena, UNK made more mistakes. The game featured almost as many missed shots (82) as points, and the Lopers particularly struggled with finding the net inside the new, cavernous gym, shooting 20.8 percent from the floor. They committed 33 turnovers, too, often on wild, hurried passes. NU scored 35 points off those turnovers.

Nebraska was just as cold in the game's first 12 minutes, missing 20 of 23 shots.

Said junior forward Emily Cady of Seward: “We're still trying to get used to (the arena).”

But freshman Hannah Tvrdy's layup at the 7:49 mark triggered a 23-3 run to end the half. Tvrdy, from Seward, paced Nebraska's bench with 11 points, including two 3-pointers.

Hooper (20 points, 11 rebounds) and Cady (11 points, 12 rebounds) finished with double-doubles. The Lopers — whose players hung around the arena after the game for pictures until the lights were dimmed — were led by former Kearney High School star Nicole Arp, who had seven points and eight rebounds.

Referees called 46 fouls, including several in the final minute, as UNK played a half-court trapping defense and NU didn't relent from its tight man-to-man style.

Husker turnovers: A slippery slope
Bo Pelini has coached 68 games at Nebraska. When NUís turnover margin is positive or even, the Huskers are 35-2. When they lose the turnover battle, theyíre 13-18. Why hasnít Nebraska joined the nationís elite? More than anything, itís turnovers.
