Brookings, S.D. — The Nebraska wrestling team finished with three champions Sunday at the season-opening Warren Williamson/Daktronics Open.
The Huskers and Missouri squared off in five of the tournament’s 10 championship matches, with Nebraska winning three.
The Huskers’ two returning All-Americans, James Green and Robert Kokesh, won their weight classes.
Green won the 157-pound division when Missouri’s Kyle Bradley defaulted in the final because of an injury, while Kokesh won at 174 with a 13-3 major decision over Missouri’s Mike England. Kokesh had two pins among his five wins Sunday.
NU’s Collin Jensen, a redshirt freshman from Mobridge, S.D., won the heavyweight division as he decisioned Missouri’s Devon Mellon 7-3.
Missouri’s Drake Houdashelt, who is ranked third nationally at 149 pounds, decisioned NU’s fourth-ranked Jake Sueflohn 9-3 in the final. In the other Missouri-Nebraska final, Trevor Jauch decisioned NU sophomore Anthony Abidin 5-3 at 141.
North Dakota State’s Joshua Rodriguez earned a 3-1 decision over Nebraska freshman Tim Lambert in the 125-pound final. Rodriguez had decisioned another Husker, Shawn Nagel, 6-2 in the semifinals.
A pair of Husker redshirt freshmen, T.J. Dudley and Aaron Studebaker, competed for third place at 184 pounds. Dudley won that match 9-4.
Junior Spencer Johnson (197) also finished third as his only loss was a one-point decision in the semifinals. And at 133, redshirt freshman Ben Morgan won his last six matches to finish third.
Brandon Wilbourn placed fourth at 165.
