Sam McKewon and Jon Nyatawa break down the key plays in the Nebraska-Northwestern game, one quarter at a time.
* * *
Tim Beck: NU's offensive coordinator calls an opening drive full of no-huddle pace, and he's not afraid to rely on option, either. Quarterback Tommy Armstrong finishes the drive with two straight option runs, the last of which comes out of the inverted wishbone. He scores from 5 yards out for a 7-0 lead.
Nebraska's defense: Calls a timeout before a third-down play at midfield and appears to wrap up Colter with a blitz, only to watch Colter wind his way through countless tackles for a first down.
Kain Colter: Northwestern running back Treyvon Green scores from a yard out, and the game is tied at 7.
Colter: Northwestern forces a punt, and the Wildcat quarterback goes back to work, throwing a 17-yard pass to Stephen Buckley, who leaves the game with a serious left knee injury. Colter then scrambles 11 yards for a first down two plays later.
Green: Bolts 39 yards through the middle of NU's defense on a basic dive play. He finishes the drive with a 5-yard touchdown run two plays later. Northwestern leads 14-7.
Pat Smith: The Husker kicker misses a 48-yard field goal off the right upright.
Chi Chi Araguzo: Northwestern's best linebacker reads the eyes of Husker quarterback Ron Kellogg and steps in front of a quick slant pass for an interception.
Corey Cooper: The Husker safety comes on a blitz and misses badly on an open, easy tackle of Green, who scoots into the end zone for a 10-yard touchdown. Northwestern leads 21-7.
Armstrong: Throws a 3-yard touchdown to Quincy Enunwa to cut Northwestern's lead to 21-14.
Jason Ankrah: The NU defensive end thwarts a Northwestern drive with a 10-yard sack.
Beck: After the Huskers reach the Wildcat 36 on their ensuing drive, he calls for two passes in three plays. Both are incompletions, Nebraska punts, and the halftime score eventually remains 21-14.
Cooper: Sacks Colter to derail Northwestern's opening drive. Nebraska can't capitalize.
Avery Moss: The NU defensive end picks off Northwestern quarterback Trevor Siemian and returns the interception 25 yards for a momentum-changing touchdown.
Ciante Evans: On Northwestern's ensuing drive, he nails Colter for an 8-yard loss. Northwestern punts again.
Armstrong: Throws a bad interception straight to Wildcat cornerback Dwight White.
Green: Busts open for 16 yards. But Northwestern's drive stalls at the Husker 40, and Wildcat coach Pat Fitzgerald opts to punt instead of going for a fourth-and-3.
Armstrong: Ends the quarter with two strong completions to Alonzo Moore and Sam Burtch. NU has the ball at the Northwestern 35 to start the fourth quarter.
Collin Ellis: Armstrong rolls out of the pocket on third-and-20, searching for an open guy. He launches the ball into traffic. It's tipped and Ellis snatches the football for an interception early in the quarter.
Abdullah: He breaks free for his longest run of the day, gaining 26 yards on a first down with about 12 minutes left.
Moss: The redshirt freshman tracks down Colter in the backfield, dragging down the Northwestern quarterback for a 10-yard loss midway through the fourth.
Tyler Scott: The defensive end drops into coverage, and Armstrong never sees him. The pass goes right to Scott, and he doesn't miss it, returning it 29 yards to the Nebraska 7-yard line with 2:25 left.
Randy Gregory: He's there in time to prevent Colter from cutting back inside on a third-down run, stopping him for a 2-yard loss, well short of the goal line. Northwestern settles for a field goal.
Abdullah: He catches a fourth-down pass about 5 yards short of the first down, but he fights his way to the marker and keeps Nebraska's drive alive with less than one minute left.
Jordan Westerkamp: The Hail Mary heave from Kellogg is tipped just in front of the goal line, but the football hangs in the air long enough for Westerkamp to corral it for a 49-yard touchdown catch to win the game for Nebraska.
