Calvin Strong toppled two of Class A's prized rushing records Friday night in Omaha North's 49-0 pull-away Class A first-round football victory over Bellevue East.
The Viking junior ran for 250 yards and three touchdowns on 27 carries at Kinnick Stadium before taking the fourth quarter off.
After 10 games, he has 2,465 yards and 36 touchdowns. The records had been 2,355 yards (in 13 games) by John McCardle of Millard North in 2002 and 34 touchdowns (in 12 games) by Danny Woodhead of North Platte in 2003.
“It's a good feeling,'' Strong said.
The 5-foot-8, 172-pound junior scored on his first play, a toss sweep around right end with 8:16 left in the opening quarter, to tie Woodhead's record.
Bellevue East did its best to bottle him up, changing up its defensive fronts almost every snap. The Chieftains held him to 45 yards on his next eight touches while the game was still 7-0. North's Peyton Nelson made it 14-0 with a 30-yard post-pattern touchdown pass to Davion Reed, and Strong finished the first half with touchdown runs of 25 yards, pushing him past McCardle's mark, and 2 yards.
“He's the real deal,” North coach Larry Martin said. “He forces teams to play every down for four quarters. He's a good-hearted, tough kid.”
North got the running-clock timing started with Nelson's 8-yard pass to DeValon Whitcomb and Joe Polito's fifth of seven extra points with 2:48 left in the third quarter.
Tavion Seals' 83-yard run and Grant Martin's 40-yard interception return completed the scoring.
Bellevue East quarterback Trev Lovell was 11 of 32 for 113 yards and three interceptions.
“We've made some adjustments going against spread teams like East,” Martin said.
No. 2 Omaha North (9-1) advances to host No. 6 Millard North for the second time in three weeks next Friday at Kinnick. The Vikings beat the Mustangs 38-24 last week.
