Rylie Unzicker is awfully good at keeping a secret.
Before she took her first high school class, the Millard South freshman verbally committed to play softball at Nebraska.
Unzicker didn't make that decision public until Saturday, one week after the Patriots won their third consecutive Class A state championship.
“I wanted to keep it quiet my team and I had finished the season,” Unzicker said. “Nebraska was always a place I wanted to go, I've been to several camps, and the environment and the coaches there; everything just felt right.”
In her first season of high school ball, Unzicker his .551 with 43 hits, 28 RBIs and six home runs as a left-handed triple-threat batter. Her older sister Madi is set to attend Nebraska next school year.
Unzicker said she was surprised to get the offer so early, but now there's plenty of work to do to continue improving.
“Every day is hard work and I have to keep my effort up,” Unzicker said. “There are people watching and I still have to set the bar high. Always about getting better every day, improving not just for myself but for the team, too.”
