ALLIANCE — Cody Robinson finished the night with 20 carries for 187 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Alliance football team to a 35-16 win over Gering on Friday night at Alliance.
The win improves Alliance to 4-5 on the season and gives them an outside chance for a spot in the Class B playoffs starting next week. Gering ends its season with an overall record of 2-7.
“I was really proud of our kids, they fought hard against a tough Gering team,” Alliance coach Travis Hawk said. “I don’t think Gering’s record is indicitive of the caliber of team they are. They’ve had some rough luck with some close games. Our district is one of the toughest in the state. Of the nine teams, there are only two teams that will not make the playoffs and that’s Gering and Hastings. Having a nine-team schedule and seven of them going to the playoffs is phenomenal.”
Gering struck first in the contest when Dillon DeMott hit Justin Brester for a 15-yard touchdown pass on the first series of the game to give Gering the 7-0 advantage. Robinson, though, was just heating up. The Alliance junior put Alliance on the board shortly after on a 5-yard run, followed by a two-point conversion to give Alliance the lead 8-7.
After a 32-yard field goal by Gage Smith early in the second quarter, Robinson struck again, this time on Alliance’s first play of the ensuing possesion, taking it 65 yards for a touchdown. A 50-yard pass from Trevor Kamerzell to Cameron Nagaki later in the half gave Alliance a 22-10 halftime lead.
Robinson kept the momentum going for Alliance in the third, breaking a 67-yard touchdown run on the first play from scrimmage, followed by a 1-yard run later in the quarter to give Alliance the commanding 35-10 lead going into the final period. Gering’s Deion Contrares punched in a 2-yard touchdown run in the fourth, but it wasn’t enough.
Gering coach Jimmie Rhodes said that despite the loss, he was proud of the way his team composed themselves throughout the tough season.
“Like I told all of the kids earlier, what we do in the classroom and the community, how we represent our town — those are the important things we talk about,” Rhodes said. “Where we’ve been, where we’re going to the past couple years, it is what it is. We won two games. What these kids have done for me for the past three years is phenomenal. The wins and losses are not a representation of this program. Like I told these kids, if it was easy, everybody would be doing it. It was a great game.”
Smith capped off a stellar final season, finishing the night with 141 rushing yards giving the senior sole possession of Gering’s rushing record with 1,253 yards to pass Mark Schmeekle, who set the record in 1965.
