The human remains found near Interstate 480 and the Missouri River have been identified as those of an Omaha man who disappeared after a police chase in 2011.
State investigators have determined the remains found Oct. 12 are of Chance Fletcher, according to Agent Mitch Mortvedt of the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation. The cause of death is yet to be determined, though Mortvedt said it might be difficult based on the state of the body.
"It had been there two years, so it was pretty much a skeleton," he said.
Fletcher, who was 20 at the time, led several Iowa law enforcement agencies on a high-speed chase after allegedly stealing a car on Dec. 15, 2011.
He crashed on Interstate 480 just into Council Bluffs and fled the scene on foot. Mortvedt said police were unable to locate Fletcher despite searching the area with police dogs for more than two hours that day.
Fletcher was entered into the National Missing and Unidentified Persons Database in March 2012.
