You don’t see many 5-foot-11, 246-pound place-kickers. Especially ones who are All-America candidates at linebacker.
But Wisconsin’s Chris Borland was prepared last week to do the long field-goal kicking at Illinois.
“In practice, he was 7 for 8 last week,” UW coach Gary Andersen said Tuesday. “He missed just a touch wide left on a 45-yarder. He’s very good at it, like everything Chris tries to do athletically.”
Wisconsin benched kicker Kyle French after he missed a 32-yard field goal in a loss at Ohio State. The new kicker for extra points and short field goals is Jack Russell. But Borland, a former soccer player, earned his chance at long kicks with his practice work, Andersen said.
The kicking experiment is on hold for now. Borland suffered a hamstring injury in the first quarter at Illinois, and likely won’t be available to kick in the next game, which is Nov. 2 at Iowa.
“I don’t think you take that chance unless you have to,” Andersen said. “Kicking would probably affect that hamstring more than running, so we’ve got to be real careful.”
