VILLANOVA, Pa. — The Creighton women’s soccer team fell behind early and couldn’t recover in a 2-0 loss at Villanova Thursday.
The loss dropped Creighton to 9-5-1 overall and 2-3-1 in Big East play. Villanova moved to 6-6-3 on the season and 3-2-1 in Big East action.
The Wildcats took the lead four minutes into the game. Katie Martin centered a ball from 10 yards inside the corner to Emily Damstrom, who sent a crossing shot from right to left to beat Creighton goalkeeper Danielle Rice. It was Damstrom’s first goal of the season.
The score remained 1-0 through halftime, then Damstrom notched another goal early in the second period, converting a corner play in the 55th minute.
Despite allowing two goals, Rice recorded 10 saves in the loss. Villanova’s keeper, Jami Kranich, made three saves in her fourth shutout of the season.
The Bluejays were outshot 16-7 in the match.
“We’re disappointed with the result today, but it certainly wasn’t a lack of effort,” Creighton coach Bruce Erickson said. “We lacked composure against a physical team today. We will get better and move on to Sunday.”
Creighton continues its road trip at noon Sunday against Georgetown.
