DES MOINES — A former Des Moines trucker has been found guilty of killing two men last year.
Judge Arthur Gamble announced the verdict Tuesday against 40-year-old Ronald J. Hawkinson, who waived his right to a jury trial. He was charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the May 2012 deaths of 30-year-old Serif Hidic and 49-year-old Robert Smoot.
The men’s bodies were found on the lot of a trucking company owned by Hidic. Hidic had sued Hawkinson in court over loan money that Hawkinson allegedly never repaid.
Prosecutors said during the trial that Hawkinson planned the killings. Hawkinson’s attorneys had argued for manslaughter charges in the case.
Hawkinson is scheduled to be sentenced in December.
