MARSHALLTOWN — A Republican lawmaker from Tama County is working on legislation that would require sex offenders from out of state to register in Iowa.
State Rep. Dean Fischer said he was outraged after learning that 25-year-old Stewart Smith moved to Marshalltown without his name appearing on Iowa's Sex Offender Registry. Smith is on the National Sex Offender Registry for a 1989 sex crime committed in Minnesota.
Smith has been charged with two counts of child stealing in Tama County. Court documents say he either forcibly took or enticed an 8-year-old last winter.
Fischer said Iowa law should require out-of-state offenders to register with Iowa officials once they move to the state. — AP
