A record 4,000 people will travel from Omaha to Lincoln on Saturday – by foot. The 6th annual Market to Market Relay is this weekend.
The team event consists of several “stages.” Each stage is three to five miles. Each runner will cover three stages through the day. While one person runs, their teammates travel to a designated exchange point on the course. When the runner arrives, a different teammate continues running to the next exchange point. By the day's end, they will have covered a combined 78 miles.
“It's a day that's fun, but when everyone gets the running baton, they run hard,” said race director Ben Cohoon.
The relay starts at Memorial Park in Omaha to the Haymarket in Lincoln. About 30 teams will leave every 30 minutes, starting at 5 a.m. The last group will leave at 9:40 a.m.
Free Gatorade and Red Bull, a DJ, a photobooth and other vendors will be at the staging area in Omaha. There will be drinks, food, music and a photobooth at the finish line in Lincoln, too.
Costumes are encouraged, and many people decorate their team vans.
“It's something people continue to look forward to each year,” Cohoon said, adding that three in four runners are repeat participants.
