Stand Down: The Department of Veterans Affairs needs 150 volunteers, age 15 and older, to help veterans who attend the Nov. 2 Stand Down outreach event in Omaha. Oct. 18 is the deadline to volunteer by calling Desiree Kochen at 402-995-5174 or emailing her at Desiree.Kochen@va.gov and leaving a name and contact phone number. Stand Down provides a one-stop resource for homeless veterans to get access to VA and other community resources. The event is at the Civic Auditorium's Exhibition Hall, 1804 Capitol Ave. Volunteers are needed to escort veterans to the event's many stations. Stand Downs provide veterans a variety of resources, including VA health care screenings, haircuts, foot massages, benefits assistance, free clothing and hot meals.
The Big Brother Project: Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Midlands is looking for men and married couples who would consider building a friendship with young men who face some kind of adversity in their lives and need strong and enduring guidance. Big Brothers Big Sisters has launched the Big Brother Project to match 40 boys with a Big Brother or Big Couple by the end of the year. The community-based mentoring program matches kids ages 7 through 14 in a one-to-one friendship. Bigs and Littles get together two to four times a month, going out to eat, playing sports, watching a movie or just hanging out.
