Omaha Performing Arts has installed a new digital marquee on the 16th Street facade of the Orpheum Theater. Testing of the three LED screens began late last week.
Box office posters in the outer lobby have also been replaced with LED display panels. LED displays and kiosks for inner lobby areas are also part of the project.
The marquee is expected to be operational for Saturday's opening of the Broadway tour of “The Book of Mormon.” The kiosks will arrive later.
The Orpheum's marquee has not changed since 1975, when neon tubing spelling the theater's name was replaced. Since 1975, the marquee's message about what's playing inside the theater has been manually changed, one letter at a time by hand, a total of 2,603 times, an OPA spokeswoman said.
An anonymous donor paid for the upgrade in the signage. No cost totals were released.
