Monday night was get-even time for the Millard West volleyball team.
The Class A No. 1 Wildcats avenged their only loss of the season by sweeping Papillion-La Vista South 25-12, 25-17, 25-14. The visiting Titans had handed Millard West (17-1) its only setback Friday night at the Allison Weston Invitational, held at Papillion-La Vista.
“Our defensive intensity was much better tonight,” Wildcats coach Erin Byrd said. “Our kids were definitely a lot more focused.”
Those kids also had payback on their minds.
“We definitely were thinking about getting revenge,” senior middle blocker Alexis Anderson said. “We weren't playing as a team the other night and I think we learned something from that.”
The match got off to a bad start for the Titans (12-5), who lost senior Adyson Goodnight just a few points into the first set. Goodnight, one of Papio South's top players, went to the bench with an ankle injury and didn't return.
“That was unfortunate,” Byrd said. “Nobody likes to see something like that happen.”
Titans first-year coach Elena Pietro called a timeout after the next point to settle her team down, but it only helped for a short time. The match was tied at 8, but the Wildcats outscored Papio South 17-4 the rest of the way and claimed the first set on a kill by Anderson.
The second set went much the same way, with the Titans hanging close for a while before Millard West pulled away. Senior Kamesha Young had seven of her match-high 12 kills in the set, including the one that ended it.
Riding that momentum, the Wildcats dominated the third set. Papio South made several hitting errors and the match ended when the Titans netted a serve.
Anderson, who had eight kills and a block, said the Wildcats' chemistry has helped the team get off to its best start ever.
“Everyone is excited about playing,” she said. “There's no dominant team out there and we feel as though we have a good shot this season.”
Byrd said she was just happy to see her team show improvement since its only loss.
“Our girls were motivated each and every set,” she said. “We never let them get back into it.”
Kira Shapiro had eight kills, Erin Sosnowchik had six and setter Tiffany Wentworth dished out 31 assists for Millard West, which returns to action Thursday night at Omaha Burke.
Raegan Legrand had nine kills and Erin Warren added six for Papio South, which hosts Lincoln Northeast on Wednesday night.
