Rookwood lifts UNO to victory

UNO’s Vance Rookwood scored the go-ahead goal with 16:38 left, and the Mavericks earned a 2-1 win over defending Summit League champion Western Illinois on Saturday at the UNO Soccer Field.

Western Illinois (1-7, 0-1) scored first, in the 25th minute, when Drew Edmond tapped in a rebound off of a diving save from UNO goalie Matt Grosey.

The Mavericks (2-5-1, 1-0) tied the match in the 39th minute on Mark Moulton’s first career goal. Lalo Gamboa played a ball to Conor Corboy, who turned and played a through ball behind the WIU defense. Moulton chased the ball down on the right side and finished low past goalie Yves Dietrich to make it 1-1. Corboy and Gamboa were credited with assists.

Rookwood’s game-winner came after he gathered a deflected shot from teammate Joe Marinkovich. Rookwood, collected the deflection and fired from the middle of the box for his second game-winner of the season. He leads the Mavs this season with three goals.

UNO outshot Western Illinois 14-8, including a 10-4 advantage in the second half. For the game, the Mavs also had a 5-4 edge in shots on goal.

The Mavericks are back at home Wednesday, with a 4 p.m. matchup against Wisconsin-Milwaukee at the UNO Soccer Field.

UNO (2-5-1, 1-0) ............................ 1 1—2
