It is 2013 and we can't walk through the mall or drive down the street without seeing someone on their cell phone.
As a sex therapist, I work with many people who complain about how much their significant other uses their cell phone or iPad.
I spend so much of my time working with couples on their communication skills and how best to express themselves to each other. So, all of this technology and our dependence on it, is a bit scary to me.
I think the olden days were spot on when it came to communication. My grandparents are the perfect example. I still have a love letter my grandfather wrote to my grandmother when they were dating in the 1920s. It's a little reminder that the old school ways were very powerful when it came to romance. I'm not sure that same emotion can be portrayed in a text message or email in today's techie society.
Now don't get me wrong, I like a good mobile app just as much as everyone else. They can help couples reconnect or get out of a rut.
Some of today's apps can even jump-start a couple's creativity and lead to a better connection inside and outside of the bedroom.
So get out your cell phone or your tablet and let's take a look at some of the more popular romance apps available today.
If you are looking to enhance your romantic bond, try these:
Brier Jirka is a sex therapist with the Methodist Physicians Clinic Women's Center. She blogs every other Tuesday. Read more from Brier.
This app provides points every time you do something thoughtful for your significant other. After you collect so many points, you can earn discounts at retailers like Best Buy and Amazon. This is a great app for someone who might need that reminder when it comes to romance. It can also serve as a reminder for activities.
Couples can share calendars, grocery lists, or upcoming date nights with this app. It also allows couples to send virtual hugs and kisses to each other. This app also works for those who don't have smart phones, since it can be accessed by Google Play. This might be a good option for those couples whose lives are a bit more chaotic, and could use some virtual “thinking of you” help!
This app provides instant suggestions for restaurants and movies in your area. I love this app. Another cool feature is that it keeps track of your favorite date spots. If that isn't enough, it will send a notification to your partner, allowing them to confirm or deny the evening's festivities.
This app helps couples track their romantic history and allows couples to reminisce about good times, draw pictures, video chat, or send messages to each other. It eliminates the possibility of accidentally sending that sexy message to your mom, so you can be as naughty and creative as you like.
If you want to enhance your sexual bond, check out these apps:
Dirty Game – Truth or Dare
This app is a spin on the old-fashioned game with more risqué questions and more naughty dares. I recommend that couples only do what feels comfortable, but this is a great app to learn a little more about your partner and have some fun!
Cosmo's Sex Position of the Day
As you can imagine by its title, this is a very popular app. Cosmopolitan magazine has taken 120 of its most popular sex positions and placed them in this app. It also features tasteful images or visuals so you can see what the position looks like. This app allows couples to think outside of their normal routine.
This app is another take on an old game, but with an added sexual twist. It provides instructions for different sexual acts in categories such as “romantic” or “kinky." This allows you to have some fun whatever your comfort level may be.
Described as the “ultimate guide to finding hot new places to have sex,” this app provides 69 places for couples to have sex. Locations can range from the home to places in the city where you reside. Some suggestions might be too risqué to complete, but they would be fun to bring to a fantasy world.
These are just some of the apps that can help enhance the intimacy in your relationship. Let's embrace the fact that we are a changing society instead of fighting today's technology.
Good luck on finding new ways to connect and have some fun!
