Martinez, Huskers going slow with toe
Illinois at Nebraska
When: 11 a.m. Oct. 5
Where: Memorial Stadium, Lincoln
Radio: 1110 AM KFAB

LINCOLN — Coach Bo Pelini said the Huskers will take it slow with quarterback Taylor Martinez as the senior recovers from turf toe.

Nebraska returned to practice Tuesday after two days off. The Huskers have a bye this week before starting Big Ten play against Illinois on Oct. 5.

“We're not going to put Taylor back out there in practice until he's 100 percent. He's not 100 percent yet,” Pelini said during the Big Ten teleconference. “He's improving. He's improving daily.”

Martinez had started 32 consecutive games before sitting out Saturday against South Dakota State. Redshirt freshman Tommy Armstrong started and split time with fifth-year senior Ron Kellogg in the 59-20 victory.

“We're going to continue to kind of go business as usual with Tommy and Ron until Taylor tells us he's 100 percent,” Pelini said.

As far as Martinez being ready for the Illinois game?

“It's hard to say right now,” Pelini said. “We'll play that by ear. It's hard to see where he's going to be.”

In addition to the quarterback situation, Nebraska has defensive issues to address. The off week also gives the Huskers a jump on preparing for the Illini, who they haven't played yet as Big Ten members.

“We're kind of getting back to basics, doing some things we feel we've got to do to improve our football team heading into Big Ten play,” Pelini said.
