With fall weather around the corner, the Papillion Parks and Recreation Department is bringing back a seasonal favorite – hayrack rides and bonfires at Sumtur Amphitheater.
“It’s a very country atmosphere, sitting on hay bales around the bonfire,” said Doug Huggins, Sumtur Amphitheater manager.
This will be the third year for the program, Huggins said.
A basic package is a three-hour hayrack ride and bonfire. It starts at $250 and is suitable for up to 25 people.
Huggins said they see mostly families celebrating birthdays or reunions, private groups or small companies.
Events can be tailored to work for larger groups and corporate events.
“We are very customer-oriented,” Huggins said. “We kind of build each event a la carte.”
The events differ depending on size.
“It’s a different feel for an event of 25 people or 100 people for a large church group,” Huggins said.
For smaller groups, things typically start with a meal around a bonfire, which is available for an additional charge.
Regular meals include hot dogs or a hamburger and two side dishes. Deluxe meals include chicken, grilled vegetables and one side dish. Both options include s’mores and drinks. The regular meal costs $7.50 per person and the deluxe meal costs $10.50 per person.
Visitors are permitted to bring in their own food but all drinks, including water, must be purchased on site. Beer and wine are also available for purchase.
Hayrack rides take guests around the trails in the Walnut Creek Recreation Area. The length varies from 20 minutes to just over an hour.
For larger groups, the events tend to run around the hayrack rides.
Huggins said unlike other area hayrack rides and bonfires, the events at Sumtur are truly private and are a good value.
“We’re offering a city service,” he said. “We’re not looking at high profit margins.”
Many Saturday nights — the most popular time slot — have already been filled, Huggins said.
Hayrack rides run through Oct. 31. Times are flexible but they typically run at 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. Times can be reserved by calling the Papillion Parks and Recreation Department at 402-597-2041.
