Workshop to focus on Danish genealogy
The Pottawattamie County Genealogical Society will host a 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 21 workshop, “Researching Your Danish Ancestors.” The event will be at the society’s library, 622 S. Fourth St. in Council Bluffs.
Guest speaker will be Michele McNabb, librarian of the Family History and Genealogical Center of the Museum of Danish America (the Danish Immigrant Museum) in Elk Horn, Iowa.

Model rail club for kids sponsors open house
Youths and adults are invited to the open house of the Carter Lake Model Railroad Youth Club. Hours will be 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday.
Learn how to build model railroad layouts and more. For more information, call Lee at 402-659-5047. The youth club welcomes members 8 and older. Adult members of the Carter Lake Model Railroad Club sponsor the youth group.
The open house will be at Carter Lake Presbyterian Church, 3030 N. Ninth St. in Carter Lake. The youth club regularly meets there at 9 a.m. Saturdays.
Get screened for diabetes for free at Sam’s Clubs
Sam’s Club will host free diabetes awareness health screenings from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.
The screenings will offer free A1c blood tests and glucose screenings valued at up to $200. You do not have to be a Sam’s Club member to participate.
Sam’s Clubs with pharmacies will offer the screenings. In the Omaha metro area, these locations are at 13130 L St. in Omaha and 3221 Manawa Center Drive in Council Bluffs.
Wetland Festival is Saturday at Heron Haven in Omaha
The free Heron Haven Wetland Festival will run from 1 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Saturday at the haven, 11809 Old Maple Road near 120th Street and West Maple Road.
Scheduled activities include 2 p.m. wildlife encounters, 4 p.m. live raptors and a 5:30 p.m. butterfly release.
Participants can go on a nature hunt, see water creatures through a microscope, blow bubbles, break open geodes, play games and more.
World travelogue films to debut for season Tuesday
Omaha World Adventurers will launch the 55th season of world travelogues Tuesday at the Village Pointe Cinema, 304 N. 174th St.
“Sea to Sea in a Model T,” with filmmaker Don Van Polen attending, will be the first in the six-film series.
Show times will be 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Tickets, available at the door, are $13 for single admission or $60 for a season pass for all six films.
Contestants for pageants: It’s time to submit entry
Contestants are needed to compete Oct. 19 in the Miss Omaha/Miss Douglas County and the Omaha Outstanding Teen Pageants. The events will be at the Jewish Community Center, 333 S. 132nd St.
The deadline to apply is Oct. 6.
The Miss Omaha Pageant is a preliminary to the Miss Nebraska Scholarship Program, which is the official state preliminary to the Miss America Program. The teen program is a preliminary to the Nebraska Outstanding Teen Pageant, which is the official state preliminary to the Miss America’s Outstanding Teen Program.
