MITCHELL — A pair of firsts were achieved by the winners of the Mitchell Girls Golf Invitational held Thursday at Scenic Knolls Golf Course.
Chadron claimed its first team championship of the season with a season-best score of 401, while Mitchell junior Emily Snyder captured her first individual title with a season-low 87.
The Cardinals, who were powered by three top-10 medalists, won by six shots over second-place Bridgeport (407). Kimball finished in third with a 422.
“They're a group of very happy girls,” Chadron coach Curt Holmquist said of his team. “It was a great day for golf. All of the girls showed a lot of improvement.”
Chadron's senior trio of Cali Crile, Haleigh Shuck, and Kortney Hageman all finished in the top 10. Crile fired a career-best 92 to finish third, Shuck shot a 96 to finish fourth, and Hageman carded a 99 to place ninth. Also for the Cardinals, Brooke Roes finished with a 114 and Ahlaura Pourier had a 146.
“We talked about our three seniors coming through with a combined score of 300 or less, and this is the first meet that happened,” Holmquist said. “It was nice it ended up turning into a team title also.”
Snyder put her home-course advantage to good use in finishing on top of the individual standings. After shooting scores of 95 and 89 to place second and third in her two previous tournaments, Snyder lowered her score by two more strokes on Thursday. She carded a 41 on her first nine holes before following up with a 46 on the second nine.
Snyder ended two shots clear of runner-up Brooke Hager of Kimball, who fired an 89. Sidney's Rachel Blauert won a three-way scorecard playoff to finish fifth with a 97. Bridgeport's Cassidy Mitchell followed in sixth with a 97 and Bridgeport's Breanne Franklin was seventh with a 97. Kimball's Brianna Jones shot a 99 to finish eighth and Bridgeport's Kim Mueller placed 10th with a 101.
Next action for many of the same golfers will be on Saturday in the Scottsbluff Invite at Scotts Bluff Country Club. The tournament will begin with a shotgun start at 9 a.m.
