Andrew W.K. loves to dish out party tips and wild party anthems.
“Party Hard,” his 2001 single and most popular song, is still the epitome of what he's trying to do: create a sense of joy, excitement and energy.
With his fast-moving, joyful melodies, the rocker wants to make people celebrate — whether he's making a new record, DJing for Ozzy Osbourne or playing a solo tour.
“I'm a guy who wants to party and have as many adventures as possible,” he told us on the phone from Chicago.
His solo tour, which stops at Sokol Underground on Wednesday, is different from most shows. It's more like a party that he's hosting while playing the keyboards. Fans sometimes jump onstage, and the course of the event is set as much by the audience as by W.K. himself.
“It's like hanging out with your best friends in your basement and singing along and going crazy in that intimate atmosphere,” he said.
These concerts are the perfect way to fuel that party vibe, which is what he's always after. W.K.'s need for celebratory music extends all the way into his melodies, which are almost always in happier major keys.
“It's kind of hard to describe. I always wanted to be cheered up,” he said. “I felt like that feeling of the first day of summer or when a girl would agree to go on a date or you found a $20 bill — that undeniable rush of excitement — I wanted to make a soundtrack of music for that kind of moment.”
