SABULA, Iowa — The body of a man missing since 2011 when his snowmobile plunged into an icy river while attempting a stunt apparently has been recovered in the Mississippi River.
Jackson County Sheriff Russ Kettmann said authorities believe they have found the body of Shawn Berthel, who hasn’t been seen since Jan. 22, 2011, when he and others were trying to jump over open water in the Maquoketa River.
Berthel and a friend, Brett Stalker, plunged into the river. Stalker reached the shore, but Berthel didn’t.
Despite weeks of searching, Berthel’s body wasn’t found.
Kettmann said Monday that the Corps of Engineers was dredging the Mississippi River just north of Sabula and found a body in a snowmobile suit. Kettmann said an autopsy will confirm the identity.
