Dave Meisinger of Ashland, Neb., won the high overall, the high all-around and the 410-gauge gun championship at the Nebraska Skeet Championships in Grand Island.
Other winners were Zack Krzyzanowski of North Platte in the 12-gauge championship, Rich McCubbin of La Vista in the 29-gauge championship and Logan Hepperly of North Platte in the 28-gauge championship.
Meisinger shot 98 of 100 to win his second 410 title. He won his first in 2010. His high overall score was 390 of 400.
Pheasant numbers falling
Following August roadside surveys, the average number of pheasants seen on more than 200 30-mile routes in Iowa was 6.5; virtually identical to the 6.6 in 2011. That count was the lowest in 60 years of summer surveys and preceded the lowest harvest in Iowa’s pheasant hunting history.
“Spring 2013 was terrible for ground nesting birds,” DNR upland game research biologist Todd Bogenschutz said. “Rainfall was the highest in 141 years of record keeping in Iowa. Over 15 inches fell in April and May; more than twice our normal rainfall.”
With the fifth coolest temperatures on record, survival of pheasant chicks plummeted. As a result, hunters should harvest 100,000 to 150,000 pheasants during the Oct. 28 to Jan. 10 season.
Iowa’s pheasant harvest has dropped in most of the last 20 years; due to the loss of good habitat and — in many years — poor weather, which included a five-year streak (2006 to ’11) of winters with 30-plus inches of snow. Winter mortality for gamebirds is higher during extended snow cover.
