Sam McKewon and Jon Nyatawa break down the key plays in the Huskers' win over the Golden Eagles, one quarter at a time.
* * *
Stanley Jean-Baptiste: He gets Nebraska's defense off to a stellar start in week two, picking off Southern Miss quarterback Allan Bridgford and scoring a 43-yard touchdown. Jean-Baptiste faked playing soft coverage before jumping the hitch route.
Bridgford: Hits Tyre'oune Holmes between Husker defenders for a 34-yard gain.
Tyre Bracken: The USM third-down back catches a 16-yarder — with Husker defensive end Avery Moss covering — as Bridgford easily beats a blitz.
Randy Gregory: The Husker defensive end gets his second hurry of the game, forcing a slightly wayward pass from Bridgford on third down from NU's 15-yard line. USM settles for a 32-yard Corey Acosta field goal and a 7-3 deficit.
Taylor Martinez: The Husker QB hits wide-open tight end Jake Long over the middle for an 18-yard gain on Nebraska's ensuing drive.
Quincy Enunwa: After catching an 8-yarder on third-and-7 to extend NU's drive, he grabs his third TD of the year — this one for 16 yards — on the same route. Martinez completes five of six passes on the drive for 52 yards, and NU leads 14-3.
Ciante Evans: The defense scores another TD, this one gift-wrapped. Holmes lets a short pass go right through his hands, and the senior NU corner is there to grab it and sprint for the end zone. Nebraska leads 21-3.
Todd Monken: The Southern Miss coach chooses to punt instead of going for a fourth-and-2 at Nebraska's 37. USM downs the punt at the NU 1. But after the Huskers go three-and-out, Sam Foltz rips a 60-yard rugby punt to flip the field.
Gregory: Breaks up a third-down pass to end USM's drive.
Martinez: Clutch on third down in the first half, he scrambles on third-and-8 to find wide receiver Kenny Bell for 10 yards. Later, he hits receiver Jordan Westerkamp for a 15-yarder on third-and-9.
Ameer Abdullah: Though most of the first half is tough sledding for the NU running back, he gains 7 yards on a third-and-5 swing pass, then finishes off the Husker touchdown drive with a tough 3-yard TD run. NU leads 28-6.
Charles Jackson: The NU defensive back picks up a personal foul on the ensuing kickoff, giving USM possession near midfield. The Golden Eagles go 25 yards in nine plays before Acosta kicks a 45-yard field goal, cutting the lead to 28-6.
Martinez: Scrambles for 19 yards on second-and-long, then hits Enunwa for 13 yards to get the Huskers into Golden Eagles territory.
Bell: Makes one of the best grabs of his career for a 21-yard TD. Martinez, with plenty of time, throws the ball behind Bell, who tips it up in the air to himself. He clutches it as he falls in the end zone. The Huskers take a commanding 35-6 lead into halftime.
Bridgford: Throws a laser to USM receiver Rickey Bradley — who beats Jean-Baptiste with a good post route — for a 41-yard TD. The Golden Eagles cut the lead to 35-13.
Bell: Answers with a 63-yard kickoff return.
Abdullah: Takes the ball from Martinez, veers toward the right sideline, then cuts hard back to the left, like a sports car finding its lane. The lane is clear for a 37-yard TD.
Evans: Picks off Bridgford — who's crushed on the play by Gregory — to set up Nebraska at the USM 26.
Sam Burtch: The walk-on receiver from Elmwood-Murdock makes his first career catch a doozy — a 26-yard touchdown on Martinez's best throw of the night. Nebraska's feeling good now with a 49-13 lead.
Ron Kellogg III: The Huskers' backup quarterback — at least for now — is the Omaha Westside senior, who relieves Martinez and leads NU deep into Southern Miss territory before freshman running back Terrell Newby loses a fumble.
Newby: With Tommy Armstrong at QB, Newby picks up 26 yards on an option play. Later, he delivers a stiff-arm that's flagged for a personal foul — after a 19-yard gain. NU leads 49-13.
Imani Cross: He refuses to go down. The 225-pound I-back rumbles forward, breaking tackles and fighting for extra yards. He gains 10, falling inches short of the end zone.
Cross: Quick snap. Easy score. Cross powers through a running lane and scores for the first time in the game. The touchdown pushes NU's lead to 56-13 with 14:38 left.
Jalen Richard: On a draw, the Southern Miss running back breaks free for a 21-yard gain on third down, keeping the drive alive. The sophomore stumbles out of bounds. Otherwise he might have had more.
Corey Cooper: USM's Nick Mullens throws it into traffic and pays the price. Cooper comes down with the tipped ball in the end zone and returns the interception 16 yards.
King Frazier: With Cross leading the way as a fullback, the redshirt freshman gains 11 yards on his first carry as a Husker. A play later, he goes for 9 more.
Foltz: The redshirt freshman caps another impressive day by pinning Southern Miss at its 4-yard line.
