Omaha Roncalli scored its most points since the 2011 season, but it was the Crimson Pride defense Thursday night that pleased coach Mike Berens in a 37-14 televised football win over Platteview.
“This is the first game, by far, that we did a good job on their jet sweep (play) and all of its options,” Berens said. “Be sure to mention Coach (Mark) Bowers and his defense.”
The Crimson Pride (1-1) held Platteview to four first downs and denied the Trojans (0-2) a sustained drive.
Austen Ortmeier, a 140-pound junior defensive back, also had a 27-yard interception return for a touchdown that sealed the Roncalli win before an estimated 1,200 at Rummel Stadium.
On offense, Roncalli got two touchdowns apiece from running back Connor Berg and fullback Jake Tyrakoski.
The Crimson Pride could be without DeQuan Bell, a senior who was a 1,000-yard rusher as a sophomore when Roncalli was playing in Class C-1, for the rest of the season.
Bell said he has a broken ankle and broken fibula from last week's loss to Elkhorn Mount Michael and watched the game from the sidelines in a wheelchair.
“We don't know the whole deal yet on his injury,” Berens said.
Roncalli led 21-14 at halftime as it scored on three of its final four possessions. It never trailed after Berg made a shoestring catch — disputed by Platteview — on a swing pass from junior Cole Meister for a 48-yard touchdown with 9:13 left in the half.
Platteview, which opened the scoring on Bobby Shaffer's 1-yard run after his 41-yard punt return to the Roncalli 22, was trailing 21-7 before it ended the half on a 76-yard touchdown pass play.
Russell Patterson, on his first snap at quarterback, threw to a triple-covered Seth Starks near midfield. Starks caught the tipped ball and scored.
Roncalli forced Platteview into three-and-outs on the Trojans' first two series of the second half while increasing its lead to 24-14 on a Pat Mucha field goal. It then broke the game open with Tyrakoski's 55-yard run on a trap play to open the final quarter.
“Our offensive line started taking control,” Berens said.
