A three-time state cross country qualifier, Tri-Center senior Michelle Mumm entered the season ranked 10th in Class 1-A. Her final prep campaign got off to a solid start Tuesday when she earned a third-place finish at the Logan-Magnolia Invitational.
Q: How did it feel to be running competitively again?
A: It felt really good. I mean, I was nervous because the first meet I’m always nervous. You don’t know where you’re at this season. I surprised myself and did better than I thought.
Q: You’ve already gone to state three times, and now you’re a senior. Is it weird at all?
A: It’s definitely weird. My high school years flew by fast.
Q: What personal goals have you set for yourself?
A: Obviously, to make it to state. I want to get in the top 10 this year.
Q: What kind of preparation did you put into the new season?
A: I just run and stayed active. I’m always doing something, making sure I get my workout in for the day.
Q: What did you do for fun over the summer?
A: I did a lot of swimming with friends. Also, I just hung out.
Q: Did you go on any vacations?
A: Yeah, we went to Branson, Mo. This was our first time in a long time going out there. We went out to Cedar Lodge and stayed at the resort out there. We did a lot of boating and a lot of swimming on the beach.
Q: Do you have any college plans at the moment?
A: I’ve been looking at a few. I want to stay small because I’m in a small school now. I’ve been looking at Buena Vista and Morningside, and a little at Central.
Q: What’s your favorite subject in school?
A: Probably anatomy. I want to go into occupational therapy. I took a health class, and we started talking about schizophrenia and different diseases of the mind. It seems like a very interesting topic.
Q: Do you plan on running in college?
A: I’m going to try one year of running to see if I like it, and if it’s not my thing, I won’t. If I like it, I’ll keep going.
Q: What will you miss most about prep cross country?
A: The people. I’m very close to the team. We’re all family-oriented. It’ll be sad to separate.
